Wish you were here! – Talking about holidays

Phoenix Archive Project

Join Dr Paul Cleave from the University of Exeter for this workshop exploring the world of travel and holidays through the souvenirs, mementoes, and the details we keep.

Memories of holidays and our travels capture a moment in time, an adventure, a ritual, often something special and memorable.

Do you take photographs, send, and save postcards, bring home souvenirs, or write an account of your holidays. Were these to be shown to others, or saved as reminders for personal use, how might they be regarded in the future? Could they have an historical value?

Holidays are not all about the so-called grand tour, or luxury cruises, but a day out by the sea, or walking in the countryside may be just as important and hold special memories for us. In this workshop you’ll be able to get stuck into unpublished accounts of holidays, postcards, photographs, and cine films allow us to share in the experiences of earlier tourists, and uncover what can we learn from them.

You’re also invited to bring along your own holiday souvenirs and mementoes, to share with others and to explore how they add to the historical record!

Phoenix Archive Project

This workshop is being run as part of the Phoenix Archive Project. The Phoenix Archive is a newly restored archive of 16mm film footage dating from the 1930s to the 1950s, tracking one family’s travels and activities through this turbulent period. From daily life and family outings to major historical events and world travel, the archive represents an exciting historical record.

The Phoenix Archive Project has been made possible thanks to support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and The Radcliffe Trust.

Tickets for El Cine Soy Yo are £5 for participants of this workshop.

El Cine Soy Yo, also known also as The Moving Picture Man is a Venezuelan/French film released in 1977, directed by the prolific film director and writer Luis Armando Roche (1938 – 2021) with Juliet Berto, Asdrúbal Meléndez and Alvaro Roche. It is one of the most representative films of Venezuelan cinema and a celebration of the power of cinema in the most unimaginable circumstances.
