Women historically have been categorised as either the sinner or the sati savitri (innocent woman). From childhood, women are taught to be kind, subservient and good. In many Asian cultures, mothers will tie a red thread on their child’s wrist for good luck and safety. In China and Japan, it is called the ‘red string of fate’ and will attract love and a soul mate. In Indian culture for every knot, mothers make a wish or say a prayer and the red string is kept as long as possible.

When a girl becomes a woman; the very same thread that guarantees her protection becomes a noose around her freedom and choices. Society, are the marionettes, orchestrating and controlling every move, emotion and being of a woman, reducing her to become a mere object. When these women cut their strings and choose freedom, they are shamed for their choices and labelled to be “bad” and “rebellious.”

thRED – represents all kinds of women in this world; the good, the bad, the “witches”. We want the audience to embrace the so-called evil parts of a woman and bring focus to the ones that toe the line. Our concept redefines the meaning of “witches” who are nothing more than strong, independent, and flawed women shamed by society for embracing their true nature, good and bad.

Exeter is the last place in England that women were hung as witches. We invite you to return to the place where those women were tried, and sentenced to death, for an immersive short film experience, that in strange ways, shapes, & forms, reflect that ancient evil.

Join us in Rougemont Gardens under the moon and sky on Thursday, Friday or Saturday for one of 6 different site-specific expanded cinema shows, or get a pass and experience them all.

Craft Cinema has been working with MA International Film Business Students from the University of Exeter and the London Film School to develop a unique and immersive expanded cinema show. This is more than just a screening, it is an experience!

Expect weird and wonderful short films woven with art and performance, programmed by an international group of cinephiles & professionals, that are destined to take their place at the forefront of the film industry worldwide, delivering their own responses to Exeter’s specific local history.

This event will take place outdoors. We advise you to dress for all weather and bring appropriate clothing if it is wet or cold. In the event that the forecast predicts weather that may cause a disruption to shows we will contact all customers in advance and follow Exeter Phoenix’s cancellation policy.

IN DREAMS ARE MONSTERS: A season of Folk horror

Cultures will clash and satanic urges expressed through a series of features, short films, immersive walks, live scores and zines we will explore the themes that have influenced Folk Horror through the ages. Drawing on Exeter’s connection to the last witch hangings in England, audiences will delve into the power of nature, explore the root of past anxieties and witness evil beasts awaken across a variety of locations.
