It’s 1961 and Kempton Bunton, an aging taxi driver, is about to steal Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. What happened next became the stuff of legends.

Based on true events, THE DUKE is a warm and pleasing take on how Kempton Bunton (glorious performed by Jim Broadbent) acquired the National Gallery’s new Goya in the first (and remains the only) theft in the Gallery’s history. With political activism at the heart of his motivation Kempton sent ransom notes saying that he would return the painting on condition that the government agreed to provide television for free to the elderly.

With an incredible cast, including Helen Mirren and Matthew Goode, and superb direction from Roger Mitchell (Le Week-end, Notting Hill) THE DUKE is a startling revelation of how a good man set out to change the world and in so doing saved his son and his marriage.
