SONIC LANDSCAPES OF COLOUR – LISTENING SESSION & Q+A

An audio documentary with bespoke soundscape that tells the story of Young People of Colour who have grown up in the South West.

You’re invited to a listening session & reflecting session with Q+A for:

Sonic Landscapes of Colour is an podcast style audio documentary that tells the story of young (18-26) People of Colour who have grown up in The South West (Somerset, Devon & Cornwall).

Built out of 9 interview recording sessions, this piece delves into how participants’ lived experiences have shaped their relationships to topics such as Identity, School, Community, Culture, Alienation, Belonging, Racism, Connection to local Natural Landscape.

The voices are underscored by a soundscape built from 4 recording sessions with non-western traditional instrumentalists who all have roots in the South West. These are then augmented by Somatic’s own composition and Sound Design skills.

It is the belief of this project that art can be a brilliant vehicle for social and political change.

Extracts from this project are also being offered as an anti-racism resource in Education. Please contact Devon Development Education or Somatic for more info.

About the Creator

Sonic Landscapes of Colour is the brainchild of Somatic (Somin Griffin-Dave).

Somatic is dual-heritage Indian-English Sound Artist born and raised in Exeter. His diverse creative practise encompasses music for theatre, dance, screen and club dancefloors. Although his sound is rooted in electronica and ‘dance music’ he takes influence from the rural landscape he grew up in and the myriad of genres from around the world he was brought up on.

The Q&A will be with the creator, two participants from the project and potentially project mentors (pending on availability).
