Martin Scorsese’s visionary biopic of ruthless boxer Jake LaMotta (masterfully portrayed by Robert De Niro in his second Academy Award®-winning role), returns to the big screen in a stunning new 4K restoration.
Jake LaMotta, the middleweight boxing champion who was known as ‘The Bronx Bull’ and ‘The Raging Bull’ during his brief reign had early lessons in life: to steal and to fight. He channelled his tough childhood into the ring, where his aggression became a way of combating deep-seated anxieties and emotional fears. This determination and rage turned him from a young hoodlum into a champion. But his drive for the title, his brutality outside of the ring and his almost-psychotic sexual jealousy will destroy his marriage, his deepest friendships and the career he fought to build.
Tuesday’s screening will be preceded by an intro from Dr Eddie Falvey who will discuss the subject of difficult masterpieces and explore ideas around canonically “important” films about toxic masculinity in a post-MeToo era.
Dr Eddie Falvey is a film academic who teaches at Arts University Plymouth and University of Exeter. He is the author of several books and edited collections, as well as a number of chapters and articles. His research currently focuses on the ethics of film violence.
