Michael Haneke’s 2013 Oscar® and Palme d’Or-winning drama follows an elderly couple facing their greatest challenge yet.
Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne (Emmanuelle Riva), are two retired music teachers, married and living happily enough in an elegant Paris apartment. But when Anne suffers two strokes, she makes her husband promise that he will never put her in a home.
When he is obliged to look after her without support, it becomes an ordeal in which all they have is their love.Their love is real; and it is the only thing that gives their fragile lives meaning. But at what cost?
Michael Haneke’s often unnerving work explores alienation, violence and the disengagement of the bourgeoisie. The two-time Palme d’Or winner is a precise chronicler of social failings, and his confronting films force us to question our own upholding of the status quo.
Playing throughout August.
The films in this season feature themes of sexual violence, incest, suicide, harm to children, assisted dying and graphic violence. For more information, please refer to the guidance provided by the BBFC.
