If you’ve answered yes to all that, then come along to Exeter Phoenix in January, where I’ll be running a four-week Introduction to Crime Writing course. We’ll be reading, talking, and, most importantly, writing crime. We’ll be looking at what makes a good crime novel work and how important character, setting, plot and narrative all are. And twists. About The Tutor

Martyn Waites was an actor before becoming a writer. He has been nominated for every major British crime fiction award and has written over twenty novels, including the critically acclaimed Joe Donovan series, Born Under Punches, which won the Grand Prix du Roman Etranger and The White Room, which was a Guardian best book of the year. His latest novel, The Other People, came out in August 2025 under the new name CB Everett and was instantly named by the Sunday Times as one of the best Crime Fiction novels of the year.
