Fabian’s Film presents a season of eight films exploring five subcultural themes: age, class, race, gender and disability. Though each film illustrates themes considered specific to a certain group, their narratives pinpoint the connections to issues which, as a society we can all identify.
Dir. Pawel Pawliskowski, Poland, 82 mins, 2014, subtitled.
Winner of the 2014 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
Poland, 1962. Eighteen-year-old Anna is preparing to become a nun at the convent where she has lived since being orphaned as a child. On discovery that she has one living relative, her mothers sister Wanda, she is told to visit her Aunty before taking her vows. Together, the two women embark on a voyage of discovery of each other and their past.
This thought provoking work is a testament to the assured direction of Pawel Pawlikowski, aided by Lukasz Zals stunning cinematography, recreating the aspect ratio of films made within its period setting.
