Sustainability on Screen is part of “Telling Stories: The Humanities in an Age of Planetary Agenda-Setting”, a project which explores how humanities research can engage with the opportunities and challenges posed by planetary agendas. We are particularly interested in investigating the significance of story-telling to agenda-setting, both because stories serve to naturalise certain ways of thinking about and acting in the world, and because they can invite and inspire meaningful social and cultural engagement and action.
We are delighted to be showing Happy as Lazzaro as part of this series, a film in which the titular Lazzaro and his family work as impoverished tobacco croppers on the estate of a rich baroness and her son, Tancredi. An unlikely friendship develops between Lazzaro and Tancredi leading to a bizarre and some times supernatural chain of events. The film explores poverty, inequality, justice, and community.
The film will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Professor Danielle Hipkins (Department of Languages, Cultures and Visual Studies, University of Exeter) and Dr Kerry Ann Brown (Sports and Health Sciences, University of Exeter).
Everyone is welcome to join us for refreshments after the discussion (included in the ticket price).
The film series is organised by Dr Ina Linge, Dr Virginia Thomas and Professor Paul Young and is part of a collaborative project between the University of Exeter and the University of British Columbia supported by a UBC Okanagan-Exeter Excellence Catalyst Grant and the Exeter Animal Studies Reading Group.
