Winner of Best Documentary Cannes and SXSW, For Sama is both an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war. A love letter from a young mother to her daughter, the film tells the story of Waad al-Kateabs life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo, Syria as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama, all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her.
Her camera captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival as Waad wrestles with an impossible choice whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughters life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much.
Deeply powerful
A rare firsthand account of war from a strictly female perspective

‘I have shown my film around the world and in every place people have asked what they can do? Today I am asking you to give what you can to support Dr Hamzas colleagues who are still risking their lives to save others under the bombs.
Every penny you give will go directly to support the work of these heroes. Thank you to my friends at Help Refugees who are helping organise this fundraiser.
In solidarity, Waad’
