A new monthly cinema programme presenting curated selections of UK and international short films from the Encounters Film Festival archive. A showcase of emerging female filmmakers, each telling stories of young women on screen. It features an introduction from actor and producer Maisie Williams and the Frank Film Club podcast team.
To celebrate this new programme of a short films from Encounters, Exeter Phoenix is making this screening free to all.
This programme aims to celebrate emerging female talent with related narratives on screen. Smear comes from director Kate Herron, whose notable career has seen her direct Loki on Disney+ from Marvel Studios, starring Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson, as well as the hit Netflix series Sex Education. Kate’s shorts have played at festivals around the world. Smear is a lube-tastic horror-comedy inspired by Gremlins, and Little Shop of Horrors, about a woman going in for her first pap-smear test. ‘My friend told me my first pap-smear would be the worst thing that ever happened to me… it wasn’t.’
The remaining films in the programme come from a host of award-winning female directors from around the world.
A celebration of our cultural community | Mon 9 Aug – Sun 15 Aug
Reason to Create is a pop-up festival in which we celebrate and showcase some of the incredible versatility, resilience and creativity of members of our city’s cultural community.
We have thrown our doors open for a week of free, low cost and pay-what-you-like events created by artists from our Creative Hub, that span a range of art-forms in a range of spaces in and around our building. Expect to find theatre shows, comedy, music, film & art, an insight into creative processes, networking events and a vibrant range of exciting, fresh ideas on show.
Inspired by the artists who told us that Exeter Phoenix offered them ‘a reason to create’ over lockdown, we are offering this platform to artists and audiences alike to get a taste of some of what makes the cultural community we share so special.
