CoLab Women Textile Banner Project

Jeanie Lynch, Head of Service at CoLab Women began to imagine a new and critical Women’s offer for Exeter, and about what some of the key factors in creating this might be. Jeannie commissioned artist Nic Kittle to create a participatory artwork that would be displayed in that space.

These would become the themes for the banner;

A proposal for a reimagined women’s offer and what that would look like and stitched selfies and portraits of women that inspire us in our city, historically and contemporarily.

The group was set from women that have been a part of CoLab Women services and supporters. They also invited women from Hikmat Devon, some of whom had worked with Nic on the International Sewing for Peace project that made banners made back in 2006 as a part of a large celebration for International Women’s Day and the walk for peace through Exeter, which was supported by Exeter Phoenix.

So over six weeks of three hour sessions the group created a visual response to what elements a strong women’s provision would look like through their banner and inspirational women’s portraits.

About CoLab Women

CoLab Women creates safe, empowering spaces for women, many of whom face multiple disadvantage. We focus on working with what’s strong, not what’s wrong, helping them rebuild confidence, regain autonomy, and lead change. Our approach is gender- and trauma-informed, and rooted in respect, relationships and resilience. Whether through peer leadership, creative programmes or strategic advocacy, we centre women’s voices – and we make sure they’re heard.

Championing change with – and for – women
