Dir. Derek Cianfrance, USA, UK, New Zealand, 132 mins, 2016.
Based on the best selling novel by M. L. Stedman, The Light Between Ocean tells the powerful story of lighthouse keeper Tom (Michael Fassbender) and his wife Isabel (Alicia Vikander) who are living off the coast in post World War I Western Australia. When the couple rescue a baby girl who has washed up on an adrift rowboat they decide to informally adopt her as their own, whom they name Lucy. But as Lucy grows older, Tom and Isabel discover the consequences of raising the child when a visit to the mainland and an encounter with a particular woman, (Rachel Weisz), threaten to break apart their blissfully happy family.
Derek Cianfrance (Place Beyond the Pines, Blue Valentine) once again works with landscape and his casts raw energy to bring a truthful and emotionally charged feature about heartache and hidden secrets.
‘Mesmerising, engrossing and beautifully made’
