  2. We Just Got Greener!

Comments Off on We Just Got Greener!

In 2015 we made history by opening Studio 74, the first solar-powered cinema in the South West. We have continued our commitment to paving a greener future for the arts in the city and recently added further solar panels to create a solar-powered auditorium and installed LED lighting throughout the building. The LED project was made possible thanks to a loan fromExeter Community Energy , whilst the Naturesave Trust and the Postcode Local Trust made the solar panel project possible.

Exeter Community Energy is an innovative social enterprise that enables local people to take ownership of renewable and energy saving projects to benefit the city, its people and the environment. The Naturesave Trustis the charitable arm of Naturesave Insurance and works to promote the adoption of sustainable development. The Postcode Local Trust was established in 2015 and funds projects that are beneficial to local areas.

Speaking about the recent projects, Exeter Phoenix’s Fundraising and Development Manager, Laura Cameron Long, said:

Speaking about the recent projects, our Fundraising and Development Manager Laura Cameron Long said:

As a venue and a charity, we are proud to be committed to green measures that help us create a sustainable future for the arts. These measures also help to reduce our costs so we can keep providing our community with the best the contemporary arts has to offer. The support from Exeter Community Energy, the Naturesave Trust and the Postcode Local Trust has enabled us to make a real difference and we are delighted to be able to continue our goal of creating a resilient future for our community.

The new Photo-Voltaic (PV) system consists of 54 panels and will produce nearly 18kW of power. To put this in to context, an average household system will usually produce up to 4kW. The LED system will lower Exeter Phoenix’s energy use by 38.12 tonnes of CO2 per year.

‘We are keen to be an example to other arts organisations in our commitment to green living and these two exciting projects take us one step closer to fulfilling this.’

  3. Amanda Whittington on what makes Exeter Phoenix special

Comments Off on Amanda Whittington on what makes Exeter Phoenix special

An interview with commissioned filmmaker Amanda Whittington

How did you first discover Exeter Phoenix?

When I first moved to Devon in the summer of 2011, we heard some music coming from the terrace one evening, went to listen and ended up having a bit of a dance! When researching arts centres and film and video employment opportunities online, I found out more about what Exeter Phoenix has to offer.

What’s your first memory of Exeter Phoenix?

I went to meet Claire (Film Programmer) and Jonas (Digital Media Manager) to discuss opportunities and the possibility of running filmmaking/editing/camera courses – I’ll never forget how friendly and cooperative they were!

What has been your favourite visit to Exeter Phoenix?

I absolutely loved running video editing courses for adults. I met some great people and enjoyed sharing my skills.

I also really enjoyed pitching my Jab Jab documentary idea at Two Short Nights, gaining a successful commission, watching it on the big screen and picking up the Audience Choice Award at Two Short Nights the following year! It was a great experience.

I also used to sing in the Global Community Choir (which was lots of fun) and have seen some great gigs!

Why is Exeter Phoenix special to you?

I found Exeter Phoenix really supportive and nurturing as a female filmmaker in Devon. I would have been pretty lost without it and gained so many creative opportunities – running courses, producing films and giving talks. The team were absolutely brilliant to work with and became great friends as well as supporting me and keeping me involved with projects and alerting me to opportunities across Devon.

If you could describe Exeter Phoenix in three words, what would they be?

    Creative, Supportive, Fun!

How has Exeter Phoenix changed since you first met us?

The cinema and improved digital facilities have made it even better!

What advice would you give someone who wants to make their own films?

Have a go – filmmaking is so accessible now, you can even shoot something on your phone and edit a creative mini-work of art! If you want to take things further, go somewhere like Phoenix Exeter for some technical and creative training.

How has Exeter Phoenix helped your filmmaking journey?

Producing Jab Jab – The Biggest Band You’ve Never Heard Of (Exeter Phoenix documentary film commission 2015) and getting the band back together during the documentary process was one of the best experiences of my life and without Exeter Phoenix I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t have happened.

I felt incredibly lucky to have the support – technical and creative – from the digital team and help in completing the film. I was also selected to produce a film for Fabian’s Films with support from Exeter Phoenix about Tonga which I loved making.

Why do you think it is important for people to watch short film?

You can learn about new things, stories and gain creative ideas.

What makes film so special for you?

Film is a brilliant medium to engage people and communicate stories with. The filmmaking process encompasses many different elements that I love – meeting and working with different people and getting behind the scenes insights into different worlds, technical shooting, researching, discovering and telling new stories, using visuals and sound creatively to gain impact and then editing which is one of the most rewarding aspects of the process for me – putting the narrative together and solving the puzzle of cutting down the footage and playing with the order and editing creatively correlating visuals with sound to gain impact.

Live Before You Die is a collaborative project between performance artist Byron Vincent and writer/filmmaker Dave McGinn.

What do you do when you have a best mate who is so sad he might die? Especially when up until now your friendship has mostly consisted of a mutual appreciation of 90s hip hop, borderline alcoholism and finding creative ways to insult each other.

Funny, tragic and shockingly honest, this is a true story of hopelessness and friendship told by two men on a desperate quest for happiness.

  17. A message from our fundraiser

Comments Off on A message from our fundraiser

Our Fundraising and Development Manager would like to share some news with you.

Here’s to 2018! I hope that yours has started brilliantly and that you had a great Christmas.

So far, 2018 has been a fantastic year for us and we’re hoping that it continues. This first bit of exciting news was that we’ve been awarded £39,000 from the Foyle Foundation – this money is specifically for improving the gallery spaces and is a big part of our You Make Exeter Phoenix target. We’ve also received over £3,000 in cash donations from our wonderful visitors (you know who you are!).

All of these things mean our target is now down to only £15,000 which is absolutely brilliant news. We’re planning to start work on our lobby area in July and everyone here is very much looking forward to our fresh new look. In August, the seating in our auditorium will be replaced so expect to be comfier than ever when autumn gets here.

If you know anyone who you think would like to donate (or if you’d like to donate again of course…!) then this can be done here >>

In other news, we’re about to start replacing the majority of our lighting with LED as well as place a whole host of solar panels on the roof of our auditorium. This will make us way more environmentally friendly by massively lowering our energy use, as well as reducing costs to help us continue providing exceptional art to everyone in this great city and beyond. These things were only possible thanks to the support of Exeter Community Energy, the Postcode Local Trust and the Naturesave Trust.

Finally, I just wanted to say thanks once again for all your support so far, and for helping to make Exeter Phoenix the best it can be – we’re so close!

With thanks and all best wishes for 2018,

    Laura Cameron Long

Each year Exeter Phoenix commissions new work from filmmakers and visual artists as part of our commitment to supporting artists, nurturing great talent and enabling the production of new work. We are now inviting creative and inspiring proposals for our 2018 short film commission schemes with over £10,000 of support available.

Applications officially opened at Two Short Nights film festival, which brought filmmakers and industry professionals to the city in celebration of short film. The festival also featured a competitive Live Pitch from teams of filmmakers battling it out to win the £1000 Animation Short Film Commission 2018. The commission was awarded to Cornwall-based filmmaker Holly Summerson for her project Birdwatching which will be made over the next 12 months.

For the remaining 2018 film commissions, aspiring filmmakers from across the South West are now invited to submit new and inspiring ideas for films across three categories. The categories are Micro Film, Short Film and Artists Moving Image. All genres of film will be considered including drama, documentary, animation, experimental film and more.

Selected applications will be supported in the creation of their films throughout the coming year. Over £10,000 worth of support will be awarded in artist fees, training and equipment hire to enable the development of these five new films, which will premiere at next year’s Two Short Nights film festival.

Jonas Hawkins, Digital & Film Manager, said ‘We’re proud to support emerging talent on the local filmmaking scene and we are looking forward to reading ambitious and creative ideas for new projects.’

Many of our previous commission winners have gone on to win awards and gain recognition within the industry, putting Exeter firmly on the filmmaking map.

  21. New Season Announced

Comments Off on New Season Announced

We’re kicking off 2018 with a sensational line-up of events!

The past six months have seen some exciting changes here at Exeter Phoenix. With a large capital project to improve facilities on the horizon, and the launch of our fundraising campaign in October, 2018 promises to be an exciting year for the city’s arts scene.

Our buzzing hub for theatre, live music, indie cinema and contemporary arts has historically brought a wealth of unique arts experiences and big names to the region. And having just announced our new season of events spanning January to April 2018, the new year is no different.

Fittingly, we’re starting the year as a key participant in Independent Venue Week, a nationwide series of gigs supported by Arts Council England and BBC Music, celebrating the venues that make up the backbone of the UK’s live music scene. This spring we welcomes a collection of leading names in their genres to the city, spanning folk (The Eskies), reggae (Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry), blues (Jo Harman) indie rock (British Sea Power) and more. Amongst the star-studded line-up local favourites shine through; particularly worth mentioning are the fast-growing Plymouth based band Land of the Giants.

Our theatre programme for the year ahead features some of the best picks of the Edinburgh festivals, including multi award-winning company Theatre Ad Infinitum’s Translunar Paradise, Rhum & Clay’s epic journey of gender self-realisation Testosterone, and the ‘stunningly immersive’ myth and monster parable The North! The North!. In addition, audiences will be able to sneak-peek a preview performance of the new, and perhaps most daring, show from lefty comedy genius Mark Thomas – Showtime from the Frontline.

Our acclaimed Phoenix Gallery, Exeter Phoenix’s main contemporary arts space, will host two large-scale exhibitions over the coming months. Cornish-based artist Simon Bayliss, who’s work will be on display in a solo exhibition from January to mid February, presents a body of recent works spanning video, ceramics and poetry, which tease out ideas on intersections between the local and the international; traditional crafts and contemporary practice; and queer culture and rural identity. Then from March, South Korean artist Young In Hong will display a stunning collection of large-scale hand-and-machine embroidered textile works pertaining to moments of collective experience of protest and demonstration in recent Korean history.

At adjoining independent cinema Studio 74, film fans can indulge in the newest indie releases and eye-opening documentaries, including a special screening of artist Ai Weiwei’s much anticipated film tackling the subject of immigration, Human Flow.

Alongside this busy programme of live events, film and exhibitions, Exeter Phoenix will be expanding its range of workshops and learning opportunities, and introducing a range of new courses covering everything from natural fabric dyes to creative digital marketing techniques and cinematography.
