WOW Exeter – Women Of The World Festival Tickets On Sale Now!
In 2018, the year that marked the 100th anniversary since some women got the vote in the UK, and when #MeToo shook the world, we have brought together artists, writers, politicians, comedians, activists and more for the 2nd annual WOW Exeter at RAMM, Exeter Phoenix and Exeter Library.
WOW is a celebration of the achievements of women and girls and looks at the obstacles that stop them from reaching their full potential. Talks, workshops, panel discussions, music and more, it is a festival for women and anyone who knows a woman.
Born at Southbank centre in 2010, WOW had its first sell-out festival in Exeter in 2017 which included beat-boxing, comedy workshops, panel talks, speed mentoring and early morning yoga. From Karachi to Beijing to Melbourne to Hull, since its inception, WOW has become a global network, and Exeter is well and truly part of the movement.
‘As we launched WOW Exeter just one year ago, Harvey Weinstein was on the front pages worldwide, the #MeToo movement was building momentum and people everywhere were starting to shout ‘Time’s Up’! It was the start of a loud and challenging year for Gender Equality. As ever we programmed this year’s festival by talking to the people of Exeter and trying to understand what they want from this year’s WOW. The conversation has definitely changed but it is no less urgent and no less necessary. We have loved every moment of the process, every new person we have met and every thought that has been shared with us. We’ve tried to include it all in here and we hope that you love it too.’ – Debbie Bucella & Chloe Whipple, WOW Exeter Programmers
Join us for a weekend of workshops that range from the practical ‘how to change a tyre’ to fun, Twerking anyone? There will be plenty of healthy debate, talks, music, activism, mentoring, pop-ups and performance when WOW comes to Exeter for its second year on the Sat 13 – Sun 14 Oct.
Babes in arms are welcome to all WOW sessions. Crèche facilities will also be made available. To book your free space email wowexeter@southbankcentre.co.uk.

Call for submissions – Come As You Are Festival
Scratch Night
Sat 17 Nov
When did you come out as male? Or female?
From 17-18 Nov, Exeter Phoenix and Camden People’s Theatre are presenting Come As You Are, a festival of adventurous performance addressing attitudes towards and understanding of gender. We’re on the look out for local artists to feature in our scratch event where you can show 20 minute extracts of new work-in-progress performances. Your performance should fit with the themes of the festival – interrogating and celebrating gender from cis to trans, from binary to beyond.
We particularly encourage applications from trans, non-binary and gender-queer artists, but we’re interested in hearing from anyone.
About Come As You Are Festival
Come As You Are, Camden People’s Theatre and Exeter Phoenix welcomes a host of gender-anarchists with more questions than answers, as we confront (and solve?) all the world’s issues regarding male, female, between and beyond. It’s not going to be pretty – but it might just be beautiful.
In the last few years, progressive thinking about gender has gone mainstream, and understanding has developed of gender as infinite variety. More and more individuals are reclaiming the right to define their genders, their bodies, themselves. Some have called this ‘the ultimate forum for self-expression’, some ‘the next civil rights frontier’. Either way, it’s a destabilising and liberating cultural change.
Come As You Are will feature work by the UK’s most exciting theatre artists. The festival is headlined by Milk Presents’ critically acclaimed show BULLISH, and features performances by Ray Filar, Tom Marshman and Liz Clarke alongside a panel discussions and our scratch night.
We are seeking
In-development or short performances
Extract of longer shows still in development
Performances exploring themes directly relevant to our festival
Other unusual performance events that may work in the context of this festival
All performances / sharings should be no more than 20 mins long. Please note, the festival is primarily concerned with gender, not sexuality.
Please also bear in mind, we are particularly interested in innovative, unconventional theatre. We will consider devised, self-made and solo work, interactive work, virtual work, live art and cross-disciplinary work, multimedia work, etc. We are unlikely to consider ‘new writing’, formally conventional work, straight monologues, or any work made according to the usual writer-director-actor hierarchies.
What we provide
£165 fee for the performance
Extensive PR and marketing support, inclusion in brochures, website, social media activity
Technical support
Come As You Are is a UK wide festival taking place throughout autumn 2018. The festival in Exeter will take place at Exeter Phoenix between 17-18 Nov 2018
How To Apply
If you would like to apply for this opportunity, please complete the application form here >>

Comments Off on Exeter Phoenix Design & Build Commission
This summer it’s all change at Exeter Phoenix!
Throughout the summer months, we’re making some big improvements to our beautiful building. Major refurbishments being made to the venue’s foyer, galleries, auditorium seating and toilets.
We’re looking for input from the creative community to help make these changes a reality. A Design Commission is being offered for the creation of a striking, robust and practical design feature to welcome visitors into the building. The new box office and reception feature will reflect our character as a contemporary and creative arts venue.
The wider project has been made possible thanks to funding from Arts Council England and The Foyle Foundation. The refurbishment project will see an expansion of the main gallery spaces, the installation of a glass vestibule to the front of the building, and improvements to the visitor facilities.
DESIGN COMMISSION
Many thanks for your expression of interest in our reception desk design/build commission opportunity.
Project
As part of our programme of refurbishment of the ground floor front rooms this summer we will be upgrading and expanding the gallery spaces and relocating our Box Office/reception facility from its current position into the front lobby.
Deadlines
Proposal – please submit your proposal by 9am on Monday, May 21st. Shortlisting, further discussion and selection will take place by the end of May.
Installation – in July/August on dates to be agreed.
Budget
The budget for designing, building and installing the work is £4,000 including any VAT.
Design
We are looking to create a striking, robust and practical design feature to welcome visitors to our building. It should be a contemporary piece of design to reflect our character as a contemporary arts venue.
Some examples of similar installations elsewhere that we like are included below. We are looking for a track record of delivering relevant projects and an eye for detail.
Setting
The desk will be sited just on the right as you come in the front door (see below). Design features of the rest of the space include:
Walls – to be stripped to reveal the bricks beneath
Floor – deep mahogany-varnished wooden floor to stay
Glass Vestibule – to be installed to enable us to keep the external doors fixed open
Glass Door – to be installed leading to the expanded galleries to the left
Digital Screens – to be installed for information purposes
Facilities
The desk should have the following capability:
Building regulation compliance – with current part M building regulations including certain design features such as a lower accessible section for wheelchair users
Staff – room to allow sufficient space for two staff to sit and work behind
Space below/behind – allowance for equipment, including two computer towers and two sets of drawers.
Additional wiring – allowance should also be made for our contractors to be able to install cabling
Computer screens – allowance for the installation of two box office computer screens on adjustable arms.
Dimensions
The desk will be approximately 4.5m long and 1.8m deep with two levels. It will be roughly L-shaped but could be at an off-set angle to improve flow through the space.
Installation
An element of flexibility will be required to match the design to the surrounding space, co-ordinating closely with the project manager, contractors and Box Office staff. It can be fixed to the floor and/or the walls at either end.
Submission
In submitting a proposal we require the following:
Visualisation – a drawing or computer image of the concept
Details – of the materials to be used, the structural integrity of the piece and the quality of the finish
Previous work – examples of previous relevant work, either via weblinks or images

The winning Artists Moving Image commissioned filmmaker is:
LIAM JOLLY
AMEN BROTHER (DUM DUM KA-H)
Based in Redruth, Cornwall, Liam Jolly is an artist working across installation, video, performance, painting and public intervention
Whilst exploring the shifts in meaning that can take place between a fiction and reality, his works tread a fine line between these opposing concepts, employing double take and changing points of view as a mechanism to challenge our assumptions of what we are being presented with.
In playfully questioning the material, mechanics and structures of when something is considered an art work and when it is not, he is making us question our perception of reality in unexpected or subversive ways.
For this commission, he will be making a film that attempts to remix, into a visual score, the ‘Amen Break’, arguably the most sampled drum break in musical history and the corner stone of music sub genres such as Hip Hop, Drum & Bass & Jungle
Film Previews
The successful filmmakers will complete their film over the course of the year, with their films being shown at a special preview screening at our Two Short Nights film festival this winter.
