Celebrating The Spirit Of Independence & The Culture Of Live Music

    Mon 28 Jan – Sun 3 Feb 2019

We are delighted to once again be taking part in Independent Venue Week, a UK wide celebration of music venues around the country, the people that run them, work in them, and visit them.

Venues like ours give artists their first experience of playing live in front of an audience and offer fans somewhere to get up close to artists that one day may well be playing stadiums and festival main stages.

Supported using public funding by Arts Council England, Independent Venue Week brings together venues across the UK with breakthrough and established artists, promotors, labels, media and bloggers.

So join us for a week of activity as we celebrate the places that have created some of the most memorable nights of the past and looks forward to more of the same in the future.

  5. Introducing Maketank: Exeter’s New Performance Making Space

Comments Off on Introducing Maketank: Exeter’s New Performance Making Space

We are delighted to announce a new project we are helping bring to Exeter. On Fri 1 Feb, Maketank – a new performance incubator and community hosting facility – will open its doors for the first time! Maketank’s aim is to provide space for local artists to keep in practice, create new performance work, and exchange knowledge and resources. There will be rehearsal spaces, co-working spaces, costume/scenography making areas, reading & conferencing room and a bank of resources for artists to share with each other.

And it’s not just for makers and practitioners! By looking through the large storefront windows, members of the public will also be treated to a glimpse at the layered creative processes that go into crafting performances, from movement training to light rigging to teaching puppets how to dance. The former retail shop will flip the backstage, putting it on full view to those walking down Paris Street.

Looking to get involved? Maketank will be membership based & open to artists across disciplines:  theatre, live art, experimental music, dance, performance writing, performance poetry, scenography, expanded film and video, cabaret, site responsive and site specific interventions, participatory and social practice, etc. Run by volunteers, Maketank will rely on community support to cover its monthly overhead. The basic level of membership will be at a nominal fee of £5 per month, but no artist will be turned away for the lack of funds. To sign up to our mailing list, visit maketank.org.uk. Details on membership as well as tickets to the launch event on Feb 1 are forthcoming.

Initially running as a pilot scheme, Maketank aims to become a permanent fixture in Exeter. It will occupy a large disused commercial space in the city center’s former Sofa Workshop on Paris Street. Founded by performance makers living in Exeter, Maketank is an artist-led grassroots organisation looking to build a sustainable community-based platform for performance practitioners within the city to pioneer experimentation, collaboration, and creative civic engagement.

    Two Short Nights 2018

Last week, our annual celebration of short film and the people who make them – Two Short Nights Film Festival – took place. Filmmakers, industry professionals and film fans flocked to the venue for an extraordinary programme that placed international short films alongside emerging local talent.

The festival came to a close on Friday evening with an awards ceremony that recognised the best contributions to short film this year. The Best Short Film Award went to Kyla Simone Bruce for her moving teenage pregnancy story, Mercury. While the Audience Choice Award went to Exeter based filmmaker Tommy Gillard for his estranged family saga Cut From Cloth. Each winner received a one-of-a-kind award designed by local sculptor James Lake, industry-standard software packages from Red Giant and Magic Base, a subscription to Short Film Studies journal and Little White Lies magazine, cinema tickets, and access to filmmaking training or equipment at Exeter Phoenix.

Alix Taylor, the festival’s curator said: ‘There was a real buzz at this year’s festival, and it was brilliant to see so many filmmakers making important new connections, and new audiences discovering the possibility of short film.

Festival highlights included a screening of the final films from the 48 Hour Film Challenge, which challenged filmmaking groups to make their own short film over one weekend. 25 teams battled it out, but in the end it was The Bear a festive tale from Team Yeet that reigned victorious.

A Dragon’s Den style Live Pitch event saw filmmakers competing to win £1000 to make a short form documentary that will be premiered at next year’s festival. The commission was won by Joe Auborn whose documentary project, Åland, looks at the return of European Grey Wolf to one of the archipelago islands between Norway and Sweden, where wolves and humans now having to coexist.

The closing of the festival saw the call for applications open for the 2019 film commission schemes, offering over £10,000 worth of support to filmmakers across the South West over the coming year.

Places are bookable in 5-week (half-termly) blocks during term times on a PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN* basis, equivalent to £10, £5 and £0 per session.

If you’re unsure of which level it is appropriate for you to contribute, there are some guidelines to consider below.

Once a place is booked, an online form will be sent to gather more details about the person attending Freefall, including any special interests, access needs or other important information.

    BOOK HERE

If you want to discuss anything about whether Freefall is right for you or any issues booking a place, please contact Kathy.norris@exeterphoenix.org.uk .

    *PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN

Our “Pay What You Can” model has three payment levels equivalent to £10, £5 and £0 per session (£50, £25 and £0 per half term block). Even the highest payment option does not cover the full cost of delivering these sessions, but it will help support our fundraising efforts and help us to use our valuable charitable funds where they are most needed.

No proof of income or eligibility for the free or more heavily subsidised places will be required – we know that all families have different situations, obligations and priorities and we trust you to choose what is right and affordable for you.

For 14 years, Exeter Phoenix has been committed to delivering Freefall as a means of ensuring that all young people, regardless of the financial and social barriers that they may face, are able to access high quality creative activities and release their potential. However rising costs and reductions in the numbers of funders able to continue supporting this long-term work have made meeting the costs of this increasingly difficult and, as things are, we do not have sufficient support in place to be able to continue delivering this project in this way.

Pay What You Can is a change to the way we deliver Freefall; continuing our fundraising efforts to ensure that it is still free for those who need it to be, but enabling those who can afford to contribute to do so in order for the project to survive.

If you would like to make a one off or recurring donation to support our work, please use the Donate Now button at the bottom of the page.

The latest feature film from the director of The Wolfpack, Skate Kitchen follows shy 18-year-old skateboarder, Camille. Camille lives on Long Island with her mother. On Instagram she discovers ‘The Skate Kitchen’, an all girl skateboarding crew from New York. Quick to recruit Camille as part of their gang they start featuring her in trick videos and expose her to a wild life she’s never experienced. For the first time, she feels acceptance and support from other girls. However, she soon learns the complexity of friendship when she befriends a boy from a rival group of skaters.

Director Crystal Moselle (The Wolfpack) immersed herself in the lives of the skater girls and worked closely with them, resulting in the film’s authenticity, which combines poetic, atmospheric filmmaking and hypnotic skating sequences.

She is determined to lead a much-needed overhaul to the visual narrative of surfing, fostering a more healthy, diverse and inclusive sporting culture. Sophie is also an ambassador for a Girls Only surf and yoga camp.

    DANI ABULHAWA

Dani is a British-Palestinian skater and academic, whose work explores the social and cultural impact of skateboarding in conflict zones.

Usually working in site-responsive ways, Dani has come to understand skateboarding (and its relationship to DIY aesthetics, gender, play and urban spaces) as a persistent backdrop to the range of things she does. As well as being an ambassador for the UK charity Skatepal she makes and curates performances, mentors, consults, and writes about performance, art and skateboarding. Dani also delivers skateboarding workshops.

    KATE GARRARD

Kate is a roller skater & business owner running Momma Trucker Skates on Cowick Street in Exeter. Having skated since she was around 5 years old, Kate eventually joined a local roller derby team not long after getting out of an abusive relationship. Kate competed with the team for 5 years and has experienced the highs & lows of female team sports. She has since become an advocate for standing up to bullying & discrimination within the sport of roller derby.

Kate also runs a local class teaching children and adults to roller skate and has set up the Exeter chapter for the global Chick in Bowls organisation, which aims to get more people on skates & in the skate parks. The entire motivation is to encourage and inspire quad skaters to visit their local skate park and to make quad skating accessible and interesting.
