  2. South West Documentary Short Film Commission now open

£1000 up for grabs for filmmakers to turn their documentary ideas into a reality

Every year, Exeter Phoenix helps creative filmmakers turn their ideas into a reality with a series of film commission schemes. These commissions are designed to get projects off the ground and help filmmakers take their career to the next level. We're delighted to announce that applications are now open for the 2021 South West Documentary Short Film Commission.

South West based filmmakers who have an inspiring and original idea for a documentary short film are invited to apply now. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to pitch their idea live in front of a panel of industry experts at Two Short Nights Film Festival in February 2021.

The judges will choose the winning filmmaker who will then receive £1000, enabling them to take their filmmaking to the next level. A further £1500 of support will be made available through training, equipment hire, mentoring and more.

Speaking about the opportunity Luke Hagan, Digital Programme Coordinator at Exeter Phoenix, said:

We had to take a break from our annual short film commissions in 2020, so we’re really excited to be able to open our 2021 short film commissions. The South West has such a wealth of filmmaking talent and it’s fantastic to be able to help nurture that and give opportunities to emerging filmmakers. We’re always blown away by the creativity and ideas that we see come through our commissions, and we can’t wait to see what comes through in 2021.

Audiences will have a chance to see the final when it premieres at the following Two Short Nights Film Festival, where it will also be eligible for several festival awards.

  4. Welcome Back To Studio 74… Again

Welcome back to Studio 74... again. After closing for a second national lockdown, Studio 74 is back with a host of festive films to get you in the Christmas spirit. ...After all, would it really be Christmas without Kermit and Miss Piggy on the big screen?

We understand that not everyone is ready to join us back in the cinema just yet, so we will continue to provide you with the best Virtual Cinema events. We hope you enjoy these, and know that we will be here for you when you do feel ready to return. We thank you all from the bottom from our hearts for your continued support and engagement with Exeter Phoenix while our doors were closed.

Like all venues, we have had to change the way we do things for the time being. We would like to share some of the extra measures we have put in place with you. Watch the video or read the measures below.

    • No mixing of households is permitted inside whilst Exeter remains in Tier 2 restrictions. Booking parties must be from one household/support bubble.
    • We have reduced the capacity in our cinema to enable socially distanced seating.
    • Floor markers are in place to enable social distancing whilst queuing and moving through the venue.
    • We have increased cleaning throughout the venue, paying particular attention to high-traffic and high-contact areas such as hand rails and doors. The cinema will be cleaned before and after every screening.
    • Hand sanitiser is available throughout the venue.
    • Staff and volunteers have been provided with detailed training and information about the new measures in place at this time. They are there to help, so do let them know if you have any questions.
    • We have had our ventilation system in the cinema inspected and maintained before reopening.
    • You must wear a face covering whilst entering/moving around the venue and in the cinema itself. You may remove your face covering to eat and drink only whilst in a designated seating area. Please be mindful that some people are unable/exempt from wearing a face covering, and the reasons for this may not be immediately apparent.
    • If you are exempt from wearing a face covering, do feel free to let our stewards know this when you arrive if it would make you feel more at ease during your visit.
    • Unfortunately we are unable to offer a takeaway food/drink service under current guidance. However, our Café Bar will be open for food and drink before your film if you would like to purchase any refreshments.

These measures are being reviewed on a regular basis and will be updated as necessary.

Over the last couple of months, would you usually have spent £20 on gig tickets, a round of drinks, cinema trips, classes and workshops, a night at the theatre or any of the other activities that go on under our roof? If so, please consider showing your support for the arts you have been missing by buying a t-shirt today. Supporting your local venue has never been more vital.

    These tees are perfect for:

    • Gig going
    • Theatre trips
    • Creative workshops
    • Cinema trips
    • Reading your book in a café
    • Grabbing a pint with friends

…And it just so happens you can do all of these things under our roof!

These t-shirts are lovingly designed by our in-house designer and locally printed in our building by Double Elephant Print Workshop.

The t-shirts will help to raise vital funds to support Exeter Phoenix during this extremely challenging time for the arts. Our income is mostly reliant on events where big groups of people have fun together, so as you can imagine, the lockdown and social distancing has hit us hard. Your support will help to ensure we are here to keep culture thriving in Exeter when we reopen our doors on the other side of this.

Scroll through our ‘merchandise’ browser to find the different sizes of T-shirts. T-shirts cost £20, plus £2.50 postage and packaging. See the full design of the t-shirt at the bottom of the page.
